What Is a Snail Mail Club? And Why I Created One
What is a snail mail club? At its simplest, it’s a recurring mail experience that brings something personal to your mailbox each month. But a snail mail club can be much more than a subscription, it can be a reason to slow down, write something meaningful, and reconnect with the simple pleasure of receiving real mail.
Remember when you were young, and you would ask your parents if you could have the junk mail and coupons just so you would have some mail to open too? You’d see them opening letters and cards and such and you wanted to open something too, so you would ask for the stuff they set aside. Of course they would give it to you and it felt wonderful to open something and feel like it was yours. It made you feel like your parents for a moment.
We still check the mail everyday but it’s not the same as before is it. Now it’s either a bill, an advertisement, or something we ordered, most likely from Amazon. We set aside the junk mail like our parents used to do and maybe our kids ask if they can have it just like we used to. What is it about opening some mail that isn’t asking anything of you? The cards during the holidays, a letter from an out-of-state relative, post cards from somewhere nice. These are the things we want from our mail, then and now.
A real letter, with that same feeling from when we were young.
Something someone chose, wrote, folded, tucked into an envelope, addressed, stamped, and sent specifically to you. The time and thought that went into something especially for you. That is the simple magic behind snail mail clubs.
So, What Exactly Is a Snail Mail Club?
A snail mail club is a recurring mail experience where members receive something special in their mailbox on a regular basis. The idea is simple: instead of waiting for the occasional birthday card or holiday greeting, you intentionally make space for something personal to arrive in the mail.
Different snail mail clubs offer different things. Some focus on pen-pal correspondence, stationery, postcards, stickers, or happy mail. Others are more like monthly themed subscriptions filled with small paper goods and surprises.
And then there are clubs built around something a little harder to define: the feeling of receiving something made by a person rather than generated by a notification.
That’s what I wanted to create with Letters from Scented Mood.
Welcome to Letters from Scented Mood
Letters from Scented Mood is my version of a snail mail club, but it isn’t simply a subscription box delivered in an envelope. It is however, a monthly letter created to feel personal, thoughtful, and worth slowing down for.
Each month, I sit down and write a genuine letter. Not a generic motivational message. Not a sales pitch disguised as a letter. A letter. Something with a little personality, a little emotion, a little story, and hopefully something that makes you feel as though you’ve stepped away from the noise of everyday life for a few minutes. Because I think we need more of that. I want to get back to that feeling we had when we were younger, that hopefulness.
What’s Inside?
Each month’s mailer includes the heart of the experience: the letter itself. My letter is an extension of myself. I share things that are personal and emotional to me at the moment. That could be a book I’m reading, a show I’m into, the changing of the seasons or whatever touches me emotionally that month.
But I also include several smaller pieces designed to make opening the envelope feel like an experience rather than simply receiving a piece of paper.
Depending on the month’s theme, your mail may include:
- A heartfelt original letter: the centerpiece of the month’s mail.
- Stickers: little additions to use in your journal, planner, letters, or wherever you like.
- A drink inspiration card: something to inspire a coffee, tea, cocoa, or other little ritual. Yes, there will be cocktails!
- An emotional journal prompt: something thought provoking to get you either thinking or writing.
- A paper craft: this is something small from me to you. Maybe it’s a piece of origami, a bookmark or a paper airplane. Either way this is meaningful to me and I hope it means something to you.
- A rotating scent story: connecting the world of Scented Mood with memories, atmosphere, and fragrance.
- A 4″ x 6″ coloring card: I enjoy coloring as an adult and I know there are lots of you out there who love it as well. I include something beautiful to color and use your adult coloring utensils on. I use card stock so you can use your fine felt tip markers and your alcohol inks, whatever your go-to is.
The contents can change from month to month because I don’t want this to become an assembly line. I want each issue to have its own personality. I want you to look forward with anticipation and awe, and when it arrives, I want you to have the biggest smile on your face. You won’t quite know exactly what’s in there but you know it’s going to be good.
It’s Not Really About the Extras
The stickers are fun. The little cards are fun. The paper craft is nice. But they’re not really the reason I created this. The letter is. There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about sitting down with a piece of paper and actually putting your thoughts somewhere outside of your phone. You can read it slowly, fold it back up. Put it beside your bed. Keep it in a drawer. Read it again six months from now. Maybe one particular sentence will mean something completely different by then. That’s difficult to do with most things that arrive in our inboxes.
A Monthly Pause in Your Mailbox
Life is busy.
There are schedules, errands, work, children, dishes, notifications, appointments, shopping lists, and approximately twelve thousand things that somehow need to happen before bedtime. And somewhere in all of that, it’s very easy to lose the small routines that make life feel like your own. That’s part of what I love about snail mail. It asks almost nothing from you. You don’t have to sit through a video. You don’t have to scroll. You don’t have to respond immediately. You can simply open the envelope, read, have your drink, and enjoy the little things inside.
And for a few minutes, be somewhere else.
Why Snail Mail?
Because slower doesn’t necessarily mean worse. In fact, sometimes slower is exactly what we need. A text takes seconds. An email takes seconds. A social media post disappears into an endless stream. But a handwritten or personally written letter has a physical presence. Someone had to make the choice to send it. Someone had to put it in the mailbox. And then you get to make the choice to stop and receive it. Do you feel that? Do you know what I mean? You have to stop and receive it. That’s a very different kind of communication. And in a world where so much of our communication is immediate, disposable, and digital, I think there is something beautiful about bringing a little slowness back.
Who Is Letters from Scented Mood For?
You don’t have to be a lifelong pen pal enthusiast. You don’t need beautiful handwriting. You don’t need a collection of vintage stamps or a drawer full of stationery. You don’t even have to write back. This is for the person who likes little routines. Who can appreciate the little things, the tiny moments. The person who loves opening the mailbox and finding something unexpected. The person who misses getting real mail, but maybe you don’t know how to make that happen. The person who enjoys cozy evenings, coffee or tea, paper goods, stories, stationery, fragrance, and small thoughtful details. It’s for the busy person who could use an excuse to pause.
And it’s for anyone who thinks some things are just better in person.
The Monthly Issues
I’m treating Letters from Scented Mood as a collectible series rather than simply a monthly subscription. Each month has its own theme and personality. For example, The Quiet Morning Issue was created around that particular feeling of having a quiet moment before the rest of the world gets moving. Future issues can wander into different moods, seasons, memories, places, scents, and little pieces of everyday life.
The idea is that when you eventually look back at your collection, each letter will take you back to a particular moment. Not just what was in the envelope. But when you received it. Where you were sitting. What you were drinking. What your life looked like at the time. That’s the part I find most interesting.
This Is a Snail Mail Community, Too
At its heart, a snail mail club is about connection. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes connection is simply knowing that someone, somewhere, took the time to create something and send it your way. Yes, I am thinking of you when I curate my letters. I’m smiling and in a good mood while I’m connecting with you through our letters.
Letters from Scented Mood is my invitation to create a little community around that idea. A snail mail community built around real mail, thoughtful words, creativity, and the simple pleasure of finding something personal in your mailbox. That feeling, and anticipation. No algorithms required. No endless scrolling. Just an envelope, and you.
Come Join Me
If you’ve been curious about joining a snail mail club, this is your invitation. Subscribe to Letters from Scented Mood and each month, I’ll send a new issue your way, an original letter accompanied by little paper treasures created to complement that month’s theme.
You won’t know exactly what will be inside every envelope. But that’s part of the fun. You simply get to wait for the mail. And when it arrives, take a few minutes for yourself. Make your drink, open the envelope, and read your letter. Keep what you love. And let yourself remember that sometimes the smallest things can make an ordinary day feel a little less ordinary.
Welcome to Letters from Scented Mood.
Let’s bring a little more snail mail back.
