Candle Safety 101: How to Enjoy Your Candles Safely at Home
There’s something comforting about lighting a candle. It can signal the end of a long day, create a cozy atmosphere during a quiet evening, or simply make your home feel a little more inviting. While candles are meant to be enjoyed, using them safely helps ensure every burn is a relaxing one.
Whether you’re new to candles or have a growing collection, these simple tips will help you get the most out of every burn.
Always Burn on a Stable, Heat-Resistant Surface
Place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from anything that could catch fire. Curtains, blankets, books, paper decorations, and other flammable materials should always be kept a safe distance away.
Trim Your Wick
Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch. Seriously, I know a lot of people say this but don’t do it, but I do. It is one of the most important things you can do.
A properly trimmed wick helps reduce excessive flickering, encourages a steadier flame, and minimizes soot while promoting a cleaner, more even burn. When I used to buy my candles from the store I thought that was normal and how they were supposed to behave. It wasn’t until I started learning and crafting my own that I learned this. It should be sung from the rooftops. Or at least spoken.
Allow the Wax to Melt Evenly
The first burn is one of the most important.
Allow the melted wax to reach the edges of the container before extinguishing the flame. This helps establish an even melt pool and reduces the chance of tunneling, allowing you to enjoy more of your candle over time.
Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
It only takes a moment for an accident to happen.
Always extinguish your candle before leaving the room or going to sleep.
Keep Candles Away from Children and Pets
Curious hands and wagging tails can accidentally knock over a burning candle. Place candles somewhere they can’t be reached or bumped.
Avoid Drafty Areas
Fans, open windows, and air vents can cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and unnecessary soot.
A calm location allows your candle to burn more consistently.
Know When It’s Time to Stop
When approximately ½ inch of wax remains in the container, it’s time to retire your candle. Burning beyond this point can cause the container to become excessively hot. I know it’s tempting to keep going to the end, but it’s not worth it because it really is unsafe.
